Religious leaders in Jackson oppose Trump’s views on Muslims

As faith leaders in the Jackson community, we write to oppose Donald Trump’s recent statements on Muslims, including his proposal to stop Muslims from entering the United States.

Our faith traditions teach us about hospitality and brotherhood.  The Jewish scriptures teach us, “Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt” (Ex: 21.22).  In the Christian scriptures, Jesus says, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in… Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Mt 25:35,40).
